This pattern was inspired by the Havana CAL hosted by Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar on Ravelry recently.  If you are looking for a family heirloom-worthy project, please head over and check out this pattern.  It is one of the most beautiful blankets I have ever seen!

I loved the look of the various mosaic patterns Tinna used in her blanket but I was wanting to create a pattern in the round so the yarn didn’t have to be cut at the end of every row.

With Christmas coming, I was looking to create a new and funky toque pattern to gift.  And so the Mosaic Toque pattern was born!

This pattern is worked in the round, so instead of having to break the yarn at the end of every row, you simply drop the color you are not working with and pick it up for the next round. Easy peasy!

The Technique:

The mosaic technique is amazingly simple to learn.  It consists of single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches – that’s it!

The trick is how and where the stitches are placed.

All of the single crochet (sc) stitches are worked into the back loops only of the stitches in the previous row.

All of the double crochet (dc) stitches are worked into the front loop only of the stitch TWO ROWS below.
